How to Link BVN to NIN in 2026 — Fix a Restricted Account Fast

CBN's BVN-NIN linking deadline has passed and unlinked accounts are being restricted. Here's exactly how to link your BVN and NIN and unlock your account.

How to Link BVN to NIN in 2026 — Fix a Restricted Account Fast If your bank account suddenly can't send money, this is probably why — and here's how to sort it in minutes. If you've tried to transfer money recently and gotten hit with an error, or your account has been placed on "Post No Debit," there's a good chance it's because your **BVN and NIN aren't linked** on your bank record. The Central Bank of Nigeria's deadline for this has already passed, and banks are actively enforcing restrictions on accounts that haven't complied. The good news: fixing it usually takes less than ten minutes once you have both numbers ready. Why This Is Happening The CBN has tightened Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements across all Nigerian banks. Every Tier 2 and Tier 3 account must have **both** a BVN and NIN linked, and Tier 1 accounts must have at least one. Banks were directed to reconcile customer data and place restrictions — including blocking debit transactions — on accounts that don't comply. If your name, date of birth, or other details don't match between your BVN and NIN records, that can also trigger a restriction until you sort it out in person. If this has already hit your account, don't panic — it's fixable, and in most cases you don't need to visit a branch. What You Need Before You Start - Your **BVN** (Bank Verification Number, 11 digits) - Your **NIN** (National Identification Number, 11 digits) - The phone number linked to your bank account, with airtime or data Don't have your BVN? Retrieve it first: Dial **\*565*0#** on the phone number linked to your bank account. Follow the prompt to enter your date of birth, and your BVN will be displayed and sent via SMS. There's usually a small fee (~₦20) for this. Don't have your NIN? Retrieve it first: Dial **\*346#** on the phone number you used to register with NIMC, and select "NIN Retrieval." See our full NIN guide if you need more detail on this step. Method 1 — Link via Your Bank's Mobile App (Fastest) Most Nigerian banks now have this built directly into their app: 1. Open your bank's mobile app and log in 2. Look for a menu option like **"Link BVN/NIN"**, **"Update KYC"**, or **"Account Verification"** — usually under Settings or More 3. Enter your BVN and NIN as prompted 4. The app will send an **OTP** to your registered phone number 5. Enter the 6-digit OTP to verify 6. Some banks will also ask you to complete a CAPTCHA before finalising Once submitted, most banks process this within a few hours, though some can take up to 24-48 hours depending on system load. Method 2 — Link via USSD Many banks also support linking through their USSD banking code (the same one you use for transfers and balance checks). The exact menu wording varies by bank, but the general pattern is: 1. Dial your bank's USSD code (e.g. \*737#, \*901#, \*966#, etc. — whichever your bank uses) 2. Look for an option like **"BVN/NIN Update"** or **"KYC Update"** in the menu 3. Follow the prompts to enter your NIN 4. Confirm
